A Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD), also known as a DEXA, is a scan that passes two different energy levels of ultra low dose X-ray through your body to measure bone, muscle and fat. The appointment typically takes less than half an hour. No preparation is necessary. Please wear comfortable clothing to your appointment.
When you book your appointment, let us know if any of these apply to you –
- Pregnant – or pregnancy suspected.
- The technologist will also need to know if any barium examinations, contrast injections or radioisotope tests have been performed recently. If so, the scan should not be performed for 10-14 days after this.
- Recent spinal surgery, particularly with metallic implants or hip surgery.
HIS and QDI offers bulk billing for patients. Although some studies or patients do not qualify for bulk billing, like workers compensation, third party, pre-employment or they do not have a Medicare card. Our friendly and professional staff will discuss this when you make your appointment.
Please discuss with the Imaging centre site regarding when your result and images will be available. Typically these results are forwarded electronically to your referring doctor.
